Harvester Ants
Harvester ants get their name from their behavior of collecting seeds as their primary food source. These foragers can grow up to one inch in length and can range in color from red to a dark brown. There are 22 different species of harvester ant, and many of them can be found in South Florida.
These pests are known to have a painful sting and can be quite aggressive when their nest is disturbed. Their mounds are often found in lawns or other grassy areas, especially in open areas with ample sunlight. This makes harvester ants quite common in South Florida. While they might seem like a nuisance, they are important for the ecosystem, due to their spread of seeds.
Harvester ants are often attracted to areas with their food source. This is why they are often found in residential areas. The best way to get rid of them is to keep your home and lawn clean. If you can’t seem to rid yourself of harvester ants, then it might be best to contact a South Florida pest control professional.
