How to Avoid Attracting Mosquitoes to Your Home

Encountering mosquitoes anywhere can ruin your day, but finding them at your home is often even worse. Summer nights should be the perfect time to entertain in your backyard or relax on your front porch. However, when you’re outside, it can be difficult to avoid pests, especially the biting and bloodsucking kind. Read on for some tried and true tips for keeping mosquitoes away from your yard.

Eliminate standing water.

Mosquitoes breed and lay eggs in standing water, so one of the best ways to avoid mosquitoes is to ensure there’s no standing water in your home. If you have a pool, keep that water moving. Change out your birdbath water frequently, and don’t leave flower pots outside without plants in them. Make sure water has somewhere to drain to after it rains, cleaning out clogged gutters to keep the water flowing.

Maintain your yard.

Mowing the lawn regularly can go a long way toward keeping mosquitoes at bay. By keeping your grass and other vegetation trimmed up, you can avoid giving mosquitoes a place to hang out. You can also try planting flowers like lavender and marigolds, which are thought to repel mosquitoes. Keeping bright lights far off the ground can also help you avoid mosquitoes, or at least avoid being close to them.

Use mosquito-repelling products.

Most people know that burning citronella candles can help keep mosquitoes away when you’re spending time outside. If mosquitoes are a persistent problem, you can also try mosquito traps around your seating areas. Wearing insect repellent sprays can help mosquitoes off of you if they happen to wander into your yard.

Keep doors and windows screened.

Doors and windows without screens are inviting all kinds of pests, especially ones like mosquitoes that can fly inside. Make sure your doors and windows have screens, and keep those screens maintained. Over time, screens often sustain damage, so repairing or replacing them every few years can help keep you more protected. A screen door or window mesh can go a long way in protecting your home.
