You can always call a pest control firm if you need to, but you’re better off keeping the pests away to begin with. There are several things you can do to keep bugs and other pests out of your home. Here are a few tips.
Eliminate standing water
Standing water outside your home is a magnet for mosquitoes and will wind up making life miserable for outdoor activities. If you have areas that routinely collect water during rain storms, take care to dump them out soon after the rain stops. If you have areas that can’t be cleared of water, such as low spots in your yard, there are chemicals you can apply that keep mosquitoes from laying their eggs there.
Clean up brush
Leaving brush piles around your home or having overgrown shrubbery will invite in pests of all kinds. Make sure to clear such piles and keep your bushes and shrubs manicured.
Don’t leave out food
Whether it’s inside your home or out, uncovered food that’s left out will attract pests faster than just about anything else. Cover all food that you have on shelves or counters and don’t leave pet food outside in bowls. You also should make sure your garbage cans are securely covered.
Seal up cracks
Even if you don’t do anything to attract pests to your home, they still are likely to find their way in if you give them easy access. Periodically check your doors and windows to ensure they close properly and don’t have any cracks or gaps that could let in pests. Also check around your home’s foundation and your chimney and fireplace if you have one to look for pest entryways. Another place you should check is your attic.
Protect your pets
If you have a dog or a cat that goes outside, you need to protect them from bugs. Make sure to treat your pet for ticks and fleas, and it doesn’t hurt to examine them at least weekly to make sure they aren’t carrying in any insects.
It may not be possible to keep your home 100 percent pest-free, but following these tips will give you a fighting chance.
