No Tent Termite Fumigation: A Guide

Traditional termite fumigation involves putting a giant tent over a structure and fumigating inside the tent to eliminate termites. While this method is still used in most situations, there’s now an alternative: no-tent fumigation, also known as tape and seal fumigation. Read on to learn about this type of termite fumigation and some situations where it would be considered the best option.

What is No-Tent Fumigation?

While traditional termite fumigation techniques place a tent over a structure, no-tent termite fumigation involves sealing any holes up with tape and plastic sheeting. This includes gaps in doors, windows, walls and the foundation of the structure. No-tent fumigation and traditional tent fumigation uses Vikane Gas and monitoring equipment.

When is No-Tent Fumigation Used?

When fumigation is recommended, but placing a tent is not feasible, no-tent fumigation becomes the best option. Some examples of reasons why placing a tent would not be feasible include:

  • You have a metal roof
  • The building or roof has odd structural shapes
  • You have heavy foliage on or very close to the structure.

There are other situations that call for no-tent fumigation, but these are the main ones.

Steps for a No-Tent Fumigation

The steps you would take in a no-tent fumigation are similar to those you would take for a tent termite fumigation. The key steps include:

  1. Inspection by the SPID (Special ID Card Holder/Job Supervisor)
  2. Preparation by the occupants including evacuation and removing certain items
  3. Sealing all areas that are identified as potential gas loss sites
  4. Introduction of fumigant after all of the above steps
  5. Monitoring throughout the process using specialized internet-connected fumigant monitoring equipment
  6. Aeration to allow the fumigant to dissipate before anyone re-enters the home
  7. Clearance to re-enter once the SPID checks the gas levels and determines that the fumigant has dissipated
