How to Handle a Mystery Pest Infestation

How to Handle a Mystery Pest Infestation

So, you’re pretty sure you have pests, but you can’t seem to figure out what kind of pest they are. This is a common dilemma, especially in areas like Pompano Beach, where pests persist all year round due to favorable weather conditions. There are so many types of pests out there, and many of them leave similar clues behind. These are some of the steps you can take to get to the bottom of a pest infestation mystery:

Avoid Guessing Too Quickly

While every pest is different in some ways, many of them leave similar signs. Jumping to conclusions too early on can lead to wasted time and money on the wrong type of treatment. Termites, ants, cockroaches, flies and even rodents can sometimes be mistaken for one another. If you simply want whatever pest it is gone, you may be tempted to spray random chemicals. However, doing this can scatter pests, contaminate surfaces and make professional identification harder.

Document the Evidence

Rather than guessing, do some detective work. Take clear photos or videos of any pests, wings, droppings, damage or nests. Write down where and when activity occurs. These clues can help you reach a more educated conclusion on what type of pest has invaded your home. However, some pests leave similar signs, so once you gather your evidence, you may want to call a professional pest control company to confirm your findings.

Inspect Moisture, Food, and Entry Points

If you’re trying to uncover the suspect in a pest infestation, you’ll have to check the nooks and crannies of your home. Check under sinks, around appliances, near water heaters, around AC lines and in bathrooms for leaks or excess humidity. Inspect pantries, pet food storage, trash cans and recycling bins for signs of pests. Look for entry points such as cracks, gaps, torn screens, unsealed doors, utility penetrations, roofline openings and landscaping touching your home. Heavy rain and heat can push pests indoors, and once they’re in your home, they tend to have specific kinds of hiding spots.

Do a Sanitation and Exclusion Reset

Sometimes, you can take care of a minor pest infestation by cleaning and fixing up your home. Start by cleaning crumbs, grease, spills and hidden food debris. Store pantry goods and pet food in sealed containers. Remove standing water and reduce clutter where pests can hide. Seal obvious gaps and repair screens where appropriate. Keep in mind that these steps help reduce pest pressure but may not eliminate an established infestation.
