As hiding experts, termites have an air of mystery around them. This leads to people thinking a lot of things about them that aren’t necessarily true. As an exterminator in Broward, we are here to clear up some of the confusion. Read on to learn about the truth behind some of the most common termite myths.
Myth #1: “Only wooden homes get termites.”
While wood-based structures are more susceptible to termite infestations, concrete block construction does not make your home termite-proof. Termites can target any part of the home, including roof trusses, door frames, cabinets or cellulose materials inside walls. While a building’s construction can reduce some risks, it does not eliminate the need for termite inspections and prevention.
Myth #2: “If I don’t see termites, I don’t have a termite problem.”
Seeing termites should be cause for alarm. This is because termites typically start their infestation hidden behind walls, under floors, in attics or even underground. When you have an infestation, you are likely to notice signs like discarded wings, termite droppings (known as frass), stuck doors or windows, and faint clicking noises in walls, long before you see termites. Schedule an inspection if anything looks unusual.
Myth #3: “Termites only attack old or neglected homes.”
Unlike humans, termites don’t have a preference when it comes to the age or cleanliness of a home. What they’re looking for are food sources, moisture and access points. Even new construction can be vulnerable to termites due in the right conditions. Renovations to an existing home can create new access points if termite protection isn’t part of the project plan. So, if you have termites, don’t be ashamed. Every home can benefit from termite inspections and preventative maintenance.
Myth #4: “DIY sprays and store-bought baits can eliminate a colony.”
DIY solutions can help with minor pest problems if you’re lucky, but they’re no match for termites. While surface sprays kill visible termites, they rarely reach the entire colony that likely exists throughout the hidden areas of your home. Some of the visible termites may go even deeper into your walls, creating a false sense of security. Professional termite identification and treatment are your best lines of defense.
