What to Do About Ants

What to Do About Ants

Ants are one of the most notorious pests, simply due to the volume of ants that always seem to be around at any given time. While almost all ants can bite or sting, very few cause any reaction in humans. The most harm they typically cause to humans is leaving bacteria in food. Unfortunately, the bacteria they leave behind tends to be types like E. coli and salmonella, so these pests can’t be ignored. Read on to learn more about what to do when you have ants.

Identify the Problem

Unlike many types of pests, ants don’t tend to hide. The first sign you’ll see of an ant infestation is typically the ants themselves. If you believe you have ants, check for trails around outlets and cracks in your home’s foundation. Once there, they tend to stick to kitchen and bathroom areas, places with plenty of food and water.

Getting Rid of Ants

DIY approaches using natural solutions don’t always work, but if you only have a small infestation, they may help. A vinegar and water solution used in the areas where ants are found and at their likely entry points can eliminate the ants and deter them from reentering. Some homeowners swear by sprinkling cinnamon and pepper near their entry points.

Other approaches to exterminating ants can be toxic to small children and pets, especially with the amount you need to use to eliminate a full-on infestation. However, you can try solutions like mixing borax and sugar or sprinkling diatomaceous earth around the house.

When to Call the Pros

The kicker of an ant infestation is that you never really know the scale of it until you see it. You can easily find yourself trying DIY methods over and over again. If you try once, and you don’t succeed, or if you want to get it right the first time, call a professional pest control company. They’ll know exactly where the ants might be hiding and what to do to eliminate them and keep them out of your home.

Prevention Tips

Once you get rid of the ant infestation, the next step is to prevent having one again. Here are a few tips for preventing a future infestation:

  • Keep a clean and tidy home, cleaning up messes as soon as they happen and taking out trash regularly.
  • Seal off entry points, like gaps in doors and windows, as well as holes in the walls and foundation of your home.
  • Store food properly, ensuring that it’s tightly sealed and not accessible for pests.
