Understanding the Termite Fumigation Process

Understanding the Termite Fumigation Process

Termite fumigation is a targeted treatment that eliminates termites in the event of a major infestation. The process of scheduling a fumigation and having one done at your home or business is quite involved. However, once the fumigation is complete, you will have peace of mind, knowing that the termites are gone for good. Here’s how it works:

Signs You May Need Fumigation

Since termite fumigation is a heavily involved process, you want to make sure that you need one before you schedule it. If you see signs of termites, like discarded wings or sawdust-like droppings, known as frass, you may need a fumigation. It’s definitely time to schedule a fumigation if you find these signs in multiple places around your home or if you see termites flying or walking around. A professional pest control company will inspect your home and determine whether you need termite tenting or if spot treatment may be sufficient.

Preparing for Fumigation

Before the fumigation begins, you need to take the following steps:

  • Find accommodations for about 72 hours for anyone living in your household, including pets.
  • Remove indoor plants and plants that are flush with the exterior.
  • Remove food that is not factory sealed in a can or jar.
  • Remove medications.
  • Open cabinets, drawers, closets and doors.
  • Turn off gas.
  • Clear access to crawl spaces.
  • If directed to, unplug all appliances.

The Fumigation Process

Fumigation involves covering your home with tarps or other sealing methods to contain the gas, allowing it to reach every area and penetrate the wood where termites live and feed. This process usually happens during the first day, but can take longer. Once the termites have been controlled, the seals are removed, and aeration begins, allowing chemicals to dissipate into the air. The length of the aeration can vary, but your pest control team will measure air levels for safety before allowing you to re-enter your home.

The termite fumigation process is intense, but it’s well worth it to eliminate an infestation before it can cause further damage to your home.
