What Pest Control Companies Look for During a Termite Inspection

Termite inspections involve much more than a quick assessment of your home. Pest control experts must follow a detailed process, which involves finding out if termites are present, identifying the type of termites, and assessing how much damage is present. Here is what pest control experts look out for during a termite inspection:

Signs of Termite Activity

One of the first things inspectors search for is evidence that termites are currently active. This evidence can include:

  • Mud tubes along foundation walls, crawl spaces, or exterior siding
  • Wings near windowsills or doors after swarming season
  • Termite droppings, known as frass
  • Blistered and/or hollow-sounding wood

Each of these signs helps pest control experts know if termites might be present and what type of termite you might have in your home.

Type of Termite Species

Identifying the species is one of the most important parts of an inspection. South Florida has four main termite types, each containing different traits and preferred habitats:

  • Drywood
  • Subterranean
  • Dampwood
  • Formosan

Experts look at the termite’s physical traits, such as their size, color, head shape, and wings. They also consider where the termites are found. For example, subterranean termites are usually discovered near soil contact points, while drywood termites are found inside structural wood and have no need for soil contact. Dampwood termites usually live in moisture-damaged or rotting wood, and Formosan termites are known for creating massive colonies.

Identification allows experts to determine how aggressive the infestation may be and how it should be treated.

Structural Damage to Wood

Termites feed on cellulose found in wood, meaning inspectors must carefully examine wooden structures throughout the home. This includes:

  • Baseboards
  • Window and door frames
  • Attic beams
  • Wooden decks and fences

Professionals tap on wood and listen for hollow sounds and probe areas to see if the interior has been infested. Even when wood looks normal from the outside, it’s possible that termites may have eaten away at it from the inside. Don’t let your eyes deceive you.Finding damage early can help prevent expensive repairs and structural weakening over time.

Environmental Conditions

Because termites thrive in moist environments, inspectors also evaluate conditions that make your home vulnerable, such as:

  • Leaky pipes and/or faucets
  • Poor drainage around the foundation
  • Wood-to-soil contact
  • Excess humidity in crawl spaces or basements

Dampwood termites are especially attracted to wet or decaying wood, while subterranean termites require moisture from the wet soil. Moisture problems don’t just attract termites; they can accelerate wood decay, making your home even more appealing to them.

Entry Points and Travel Paths

Pest control experts look out for how termites may be entering your home. Cracks in concrete, expansion joints, utility entry points, and gaps around doors or windows are all common entry points.

Subterranean termites can build mud tubes that stretch many feet from their nests to reach food sources, even navigating through tiny openings in brick or concrete. Formosan termites may create nests inside walls or behind cabinets, making detection extra difficult if you are not trained to look out for it.Mapping these travel paths helps determine how far the infestation may have spread.

Why You Should Consider an Inspection

Termite infestations can be a challenge to identify on your own. Some species leave no visible trace, and damage can remain hidden for days, months, or even years. A professional inspection combines visual clues, species identification, and environmental assessment to give a picture of the full pest risk. By detecting termites early and identifying the exact type involved, pest control experts can recommend the best treatment and prevention strategies.
